DIY Projects (Cartridge)

The last category of hacks is the cartridge hacks. The nice thing about cartridges is that they have more space than the controllers, and more mobility than the console systems. All the mods on this page only require the case of the cartridge, not the circuit inside. I hope that you find a good project to work on! To open the cartridges, you are going to need a 3.8mm security screw bit, and you can find these at any hardware store, but if you want to order one online, or purchase other NES items such as game cartridges, click here!

NES Zelda HDD

This is an awesome mod which is both easy, and rewarding. This Zelda cartridge acts as a portable hard drive. I think this is cool because people tend to bring portable hard drives around with them, meaning that its really easy to show this thing off to other people! This mod does not require soldering, only some cutting and careful hands.

NES Cartridge Speaker

My favorite NES hack is the NES Controller MP3 player, and this NES game cartridge speaker would go perfectly with it. This hacks gives speakers a cool retro looking case, which still has quite a lot of portability (for speakers). What I like about this mod is that the cartridge has lots of space in it, so you don't need to buy special shaped or sized speakers for it unlike some hacks where if its a tiny bit larger, it might not fit.

NES Personal Digital Assistant

This is probably one of the only hacks that I don't like. First of all, I don't use PDAs, and secondly, it takes away the mobility of the device. But for those of you who are hardcore NES fans, and want to do all the projects on the web, then this would be pretty easy to do. Also if you actually need a PDA, and don't mind making large pockets for this, then I'd reccomend this project.

Portable Emulator Cartridge

This is most definitely 100% the coolest hack on this page, and perhaps even this site. Someone put a portable media device into a NES cartridge, installed emuators and roms on it, and then connected the NES controller buttons to be able to control the device and play NES games on it. With good cutting, soldering, and gluing skills, along with the right hardware and equiptment, you can make one of the coolest NES mods EVER! If are experienced in soldering and modding in general, I would definitly suggest that you give this project a try, as it would test your skills.
